The Temples of the Angkor Empire

Angkor is a complex of ancient temples in Cambodia, with the most famous being Angkor Wat. The temple city of Angkor, located in present-day Siem Reap Province, was the capital of the Khmer Empire, which ruled much of Southeast Asia from the 9th to the 15th centuries. The empire's power and influence extended over much of modern-day Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Angkor Wat temple

Angkor Wat is the largest and most well-preserved temple in the complex, and is considered a masterpiece of Khmer architecture. It was originally built as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu, but later became a Buddhist temple as well. The temple is known for its elaborate carvings and reliefs, as well as its impressive size. The temple is surrounded by a moat and has three enclosing walls, with the outer wall measuring 1.5 km (0.9 miles) in length and the inner wall measuring 1.3 km (0.8 miles) in length.

Ta Prohm temple

Other notable temples in the Angkor complex include Angkor Thom, the Bayon, and Ta Prohm. Angkor Thom was the last capital of the Khmer Empire, and is known for its towering stone gates and massive stone faces carved into the temples. The Bayon is a temple with a distinctive style, featuring giant stone faces carved in all four directions. Ta Prohm is a temple that has been left largely unrestored, and is known for its massive trees growing out of the temple walls and roofs.

Angkor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a popular tourist destination in Cambodia. The temple complex is open to visitors every day from sunrise to sunset, and there are guided tours available for those who wish to learn more about the history and architecture of the temples.

In addition to the temples of Angkor, there are many other temples and historical sites to see in Cambodia. Some other notable temple complexes outside of Angkor include:

1. Banteay Srei: Located in the province of Siem Reap, Banteay Srei is a small temple complex known for its intricate carvings and pink sandstone walls.

2. Preah Vihear: This temple is located in the Dângrêk Mountains on the border between Cambodia and Thailand, and is known for its dramatic location atop a cliff. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3. Phnom Chisor: Located in the province of Takeo, Phnom Chisor is a temple complex built on a hilltop and surrounded by a moat. The temple dates back to the 11th century and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

4. Koh Ker: Located in the province of Preah Vihear, Koh Ker is a temple complex that was the capital of the Khmer Empire for a brief period in the 10th century. The site is known for its large pyramid temple, as well as its many lingas (phallic symbols) and yonis (symbols of the female genitalia).

5. Sambor Prei Kuk: Located in the province of Kampong Thom, Sambor Prei Kuk is a temple complex dating back to the 7th century. The site is known for its sandstone temples and its many inscriptions, which provide insight into the history and culture of the period.

Floating villages of the Tonle Sap lake

 Aerial photography from floating villages along the Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia offers a unique and stunning perspective on the daily lives of the people who call these villages home.

Located in the heart of Cambodia, the Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and is home to a number of floating villages. These villages are made up of houses, schools, and even hospitals that are built on rafts and moored to the lake bed.

The people who live in these floating villages rely on the lake for their livelihoods, with many working as fishermen or in the tourism industry. The lake is also an important source of food for the people of Cambodia, with a variety of fish species found in its waters.

Aerial photography allows us to get a bird's-eye view of these floating villages and see how they are built and organized. From above, we can see the interconnected network of rafts that make up the village, with narrow waterways weaving between them.

We can also see the daily activities of the people who live in these villages, from children playing and going to school to adults tending to their boats and fishing nets. The vibrant colors of the houses and boats stand out against the green of the surrounding vegetation, creating a beautiful and unique visual landscape.

Street markets in Cambodia

Street markets, or "phsar," are a vital part of daily life in Cambodia, and can be found in almost every town and city in the country. These open-air markets are often the center of local commerce and social activity, and provide a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the culture and way of life of Cambodia.

In the city of Battambang, the O Russei Market is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. This bustling street market is known for its fresh produce, meats, and other goods, and is a great place to shop for souvenirs and try local food. (1)

Siem Reap is home to the famous Night Market or Psah Chas, which is known for its handicrafts, souvenirs, and local food. This market is a popular destination for tourists, and is a great place to shop and experience local culture. (2)

Phnom Penh is home to two of the most famous street markets in Cambodia: the Central Market (Phsar Thmei) and the Russian Market. The Central Market is a massive, domed building that is home to thousands of stalls selling a wide variety of goods. The Russian Market, on the other hand, is known for its souvenirs, handicrafts, and clothing. Both markets are popular destinations for both locals and tourists, and are a great way to experience the vibrant culture of Phnom Penh. (3)

The Crab Market in Kaeb is a unique street market located in a small village on the outskirts of the city. It is known for its seafood, specifically live crabs, which are sold by local fishermen. In addition to crabs, the Crab Market also sells a variety of other seafood, as well as fresh produce, clothes, and other local goods. A visit to the Crab Market is a great opportunity to experience the traditional way of life in rural Cambodia. (4)

Phsar Leu is a street market located in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. It is known for its fresh produce, meats, and other goods, and is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The market is also a great place to try local food and experience the culture of Sihanoukville. Phsar Leu is one of the largest street markets in the city, and is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in local culture and commerce. (5)

Flight over Tonle Sap lake and Angkor Temples

Taking aerial photography over the temples of Angkor was one major item on the plan to our recent travel photography project to Cambodia. 

We arrived in Siem Reap, the city close to the area of all major Angkor temple ruins, in the morning from December 9th. The plan was to take two flights. One in the evening and one in the morning. 

A a first flight was planned to explore the landscape of the area, rice fields, landmarks, the wetlands along the Tonle Sap lake, floating villages and some remote temples.

The second flight brought us along the famous temples such as Angkor Wat in the morning sun.

One of my most exciting experiences as a photographer.
